This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The Sun newspaper still insists on putting a topless woman on page three. Lucy Holmes talks about the effect that this has had on generations of women and men, and asks the simple question - Why are these images there in a family paper?
Lucy Holmes is a writer and journalist, actor and the founder of the No More Page 3 campaign. The campaign started in the summer of 2012 when Lucy found she couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that the
largest female image in The Sun was of a young woman showing her breasts, even though Jessica Ennis had just won her gold Olympic medal. She wrote a letter to the editor, Dominic Mohan, and a campaign was born. Lucy tells the story of the campaign and reminds us of the crucial importance of speaking up and speaking out.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
