The UGC guidelines may currently be on hold, but the controversy surrounding them is intensifying across India’s top universities.
On Friday, major clashes were reported at Delhi University’s North Campus as Left student organizations staged protests in support of the UGC guidelines, calling them necessary for justice and equality. At the same time, opposing student groups organized counter protests, leading to heated confrontations and chaos on campus.
Journalist and YouTuber Ruchi Tiwari, who arrived to cover the protests, alleged that she was questioned about her caste identity. According to her statement, when it was revealed that she belongs to the Brahmin community, she was surrounded by a group of students, verbally threatened, and allegedly faced attempts of physical intimidation. Videos from the scene have since gone viral, sparking a nationwide debate on caste based targeting and freedom of the press on university campuses.
The political angle deepened when former JNU student leader and Congress politician Kanhaiya Kumar appeared at Jawaharlal Nehru University and joined Left affiliated students in raising slogans such as “Azadi from Manuvaad” and “Azadi from Brahmanvaad.” His presence has raised questions about whether student protests are being amplified for larger political narratives.
Supporters argue that the UGC guidelines are aimed at promoting inclusion and social justice in higher education. Critics claim the guidelines risk deepening caste divisions and creating further polarization within academic institutions. Alongside the NEET PG result controversy, the issue has reignited the national conversation around caste, reservation, merit, and representation.
Are these protests a genuine fight for equality, or is caste being weaponized as a political tool? Did policymakers anticipate the social and campus level impact of these guidelines?
Watch the full video as we break down the events at Delhi University and JNU, analyze the political implications, and discuss what this means for India’s higher education system.
