Dive into this declassified 1940s U.S. Navy training film on one of the biggest salvage jobs ever: righting the legendary French liner SS Normandie – seized and renamed USS Lafayette after a devastating 1942 fire during troopship conversion at Pier 88 in New York Harbor. Watch Navy divers, engineers, and tugs tackle the 83,000-ton giant as she lay capsized on her port side in thick Hudson mud, half-submerged for over a year. The op used massive patches, cofferdams, pumping out millions of gallons of water and sewage sludge, plus careful pulling with cables and winches to roll her upright without crushing the pier. It was the most expensive salvage in history at the time (around $5 million back then), but wartime damage proved too severe – she never sailed again and was scrapped in 1946. Raw black-and-white footage of real grit, perfect for WWII buffs, engineering nerds, or ocean liner fans.
