Your website has a big job to do, but like any other employee you have you need to make sure it is pulling its weight.
So is your website working hard for you? Let’s find out!
1. Does it answer the basic questions someone has when they visit your website?
This job is handled by your website navigation or menu and it needs to answer the key questions someone may have when they come to your website. Like…
Who you are –– Your About page
What you do –– Your Services page
How to get started –– Your Contact or Booking page
2. Do you have the basics in place for SEO
If you want your dream customers to find you, you need to include some SEO on your website.
I realize that just the thought of SEO can make your eyes glaze over or have you biting your nails, but a few basic on-site SEO practices can really go a long way, and these aren’t complicated.
Is your location clear
Did you add page descriptions to the meta description field
Did you add an alt tag to your images?
3. Check Your Tech
If you have elements built into your site to make things easier for you and your visitors, it's worth checking to make sure it is still working. Technology breaks and you don’t always know when that happens. So spend a few minutes every few months making sure that
Email sign ups
Contact forms
Booking apps like Calendly or Acuity
Onsite purchasing
All work seamlessly and effortlessly. If they don’t, fix them or remove them.
Remember… The purpose of these features is to make your job easier, but they are also here to create an easy, comfortable and seamless experience for your website visitors.
4. Use Pop-Up Boxes Wisely…
Bring pop-up boxes up in a conversation and you will most likely hear people say, “Oh I hate pop-up boxes!”
And yet, they are still one of the most effective ways to build your email list and create connections.
The reason we feel so passionately against pop-ups is because a lot of websites use them poorly by…
Having them pop up immediately, disrupting first impressions
Making them difficult to close and get away from
There are just too many of them!
You can easily avoid annoying your website visitors with a few best practices when creating your own pop-up. Here is what I recommend…
Set a delay so your visitors have time to actually see what your page is about
Be really clear on what you are communicating.
Provide a simple and easy to take clear action
Use only one on any given page.
You may have multiple ones built into your website, just don’t have them all popping up on the same pages.
5. Announce the good stuff!
Adding an announcement bar at the top of your website makes it simple and easy to promote what’s new, what you want to build and drive engagement. Just don’t make it feel like a neon sign at 3 am.
