I Can't Believe These are Still Here...
If you’ve ever hiked the popular trails of Argonne Forest Park in Dayton, Ohio, you’ve likely seen them: the rusted, skeletal remains of the city’s original electric streetcars. But have you ever wondered why they are sitting in the middle of the woods?
In this video, we take a closer look at these transit relics and the incredible story of the man who brought them here—Judge Null Hodapp.
A WWI veteran and prominent Dayton Municipal Court Judge, Hodapp returned from the war with a vision to create a "soldiers' playground." In the 1930s, while he was still on the bench, he purchased dozens of these retired streetcars for his park, repurposing them as summer cottages and changing rooms for visitors.
Nearly a century later, Judge Hodapp is gone and the park has changed, but his "Ghost Fleet" remains standing guard along the hiking path, slowly being reclaimed by nature.
