Province House National Historic Site is currently undergoing its biggest conservation work in its 174-year history.
One of the more technically challenging aspects of this conservation project has been the portico work. The portico work began in April 2019 and was completed in January 2020. The work involved suspending the columns in the air while pulling out the old stone foundation and pouring a new foundation in its place. Each new foundation (and jacking structure) were structurally designed to support a load of 100 000 lbs. That is the equivalent of eight adult elephants!
The conservation project is being managed on behalf of Parks Canada by Public Services and Procurement Canada, Canada’s centre of expertise for conserving Canada’s built heritage.
The Government of Canada is proudly investing in the long-term preservation of Province House so it can be enjoyed by future generations.
