My Journey Through Germany's MIDDLE EARTH | Harz Mountains

Описание: This week I journey through Germany's Middle Earth, to the top of the highest summit in the Harz mountain range, Brocken.

I’ll be taking what is known as the witches path to the devils entrance in order to reach the top of Brocken Mountain. Known for its mysticism, the Harz forrest, far removed from the everyday world, is easily a great representation of middle earth right here in present day Germany.

The first hobbit hole appeared in Langenstein in the year 1787. In the period from 1855 to 1858, ten more hobbit holes were carved into the sandstone cliffs, due to a significant housing shortage in the area.

The use of the hobbit holes for residential purposes dwindled between 1900 and 1910, leaving the last hobbit hole to be abandoned in 1916. Here they sat, alone, until 1990 in which they were then used as a stable for animals.

It’s not hard to see why the Harz inspired German folklore, or why Tolkiens middle earth feels so familiar here. The dead forests resemble the outer edges of Mordor. The Brocken mountain ahead, shrouded in mist, could easily pass for Mount Doom. And somewhere between the shadows and the silence, you almost expect to see a ranger in a weathered cloak, watching from the trees.

This is Germany, but for a few fleeting steps, it may as well be middle earth.
