In this video, we take a look at the Heinkel He 280, a German jet fighter and interceptor from the middle of World War II that was effectively an early version of the legendary Messerschmitt Me 262. We first talk about the concept of war-altering weaponry, and how it's rare when a singular weapon can change the outcome of a given conflict. We then move to Germany's early interest and research into jet-engine technology, with Heinkel largely leading the charge. We talk about their relative successes, and the lukewarm reaction from the Luftwaffe.
We talk about Heinkel's continued effort to promote and produce jet aircraft, and how the Luftwaffe continued to not show interest. We talk about how the He 280 design forced the Luftwaffe to take interest, how the He 280 project was slowed by a change in the engine, and how the Me 262 eventually overtook the He 280.
