Representation matters. For many people, their first introduction to an LGBTQ person is through a movie or television show. This is when they get their first glimpse that, oh, “these people” aren’t a whole lot different from me.

With the last four years of the discrimination administration, many LGBTQ people only had the arts to seem themselves represented and to – hopefully – know that they’re not alone and that it can and will get better for them (and all of us).

The arts, including and especially movies and television, are struggling today because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully, we’ll soon have an inclusive and accepting administration and legislative branch of government. But until we overcome the pandemic, how will two very important industries to the queer community survive to spread more awareness and inclusion?

It’s up to those of us with the means, even now, to do our part to help the arts, especially the independent movie industry.
