Lumens is the total light from a fixture. Footcandles (fc) is a measurement of light at a certain point on the ground or elsewhere. Lux (lm) is the metric version and is always 10 times footcandles.

Understanding what a 10 foot candles (100 lux) actually feels like versus a 30fc is important when deciding how much light you need.

Sports applications usually require 20-50 footcandles ( unless you are MLB and need 250fc.) For the rest of us 30-60 is good lighting. Going from 20 to 60fc outdoors can increase the cost significantly so its important to know what you actually need.

Indoor lighting is usually 30 on the low end and 80 on the excellent side. Getting to 60fc or 600lx is much easier indoors. More important indoors is to makes sure its even with low glare
