I didn’t know what to expect when I walked into this Hindu festival along the Gomti River in Lucknow.
What I found was acceptance, devotion, humility, and joy.
This video captures my experience attending Nag Panchami, a sacred festival honoring serpent deities associated with Shiva. From intense moments of prayer and ritual, to families playing, vendors selling food and cotton candy, and the streets taking on a carnival-like energy, this was a powerful reminder of how deeply faith and everyday life are woven together here.
As a foreigner, I stood out—but never felt unwelcome. People observed with curiosity, smiled, made room, and included me in something meaningful. It’s an experience I’m deeply grateful for, and one not many Westerners get to see from the inside.
This is Lucknow—spiritual, human, chaotic, beautiful—and grounded by the steady presence of the Gomti River.
