A Sights & Sounds Special
Eurotunnel Le Shuttle
This sights and sounds special will look at the unique Shuttle trains that run under the sea through the Channel Tunnel.
The Channel Tunnel was constructed as a joint effort between the French and British to provide a cross boarder link under the English Channel allowing passenger trains to travel to mainland Europe from London (this came in the form of Eurostar). Aswell as Eurostar passenger trains a series of special Locomotives and coaching stock were designed and built to be able to allow road users (cars, vans, coaches, etc...) to take there vehicles abroad with them.
The large 2-deck car train coaches were manufactured by Bombardier, they are of a steel construction and can accommodate around 8 family cars each. The fleet of Electric Locomotives that haul the coaches are known under the French railway system as Class 9's which were built by Brush Traction.
The Le Shuttle service commenced in stages from June to November 1994. Le Shuttle operates 'nine' car shuttle trains each around 2,540 ft long made up of 24 Carriages/Wagons. The Service runs between two terminals, one in Folkestone (England) and the other in Calais (France), the journey between the two takes around half an hour.
Eurotunnel Le Shuttle's current owner, Getlink, is planning a refurbishment of the entire Shuttle fleet which will give the trains a more welcoming and futuristic environment, this is meant to start next year 2024.
