How Revenant's Brooch Actually Works

If you’re like me, you saw the new Revenant’s Brooch and didn’t quite get how it works or where it fits in the meta. Previously, Revenant’s Brooch dealt magic damage at a mana cost per attack and helped physical damage dealers overcome high-armor enemies in the late-game. The issue was that the mana cost part of the ability was incredibly pricy and not worth picking up for late-game carries.

In 7.38, the developers reworked Revenant’s Brooch to be much simpler and more straight-forward in its intent. Now only costing 3,300 gold, Revenant’s Brooch provides additional physical damage and Spell Lifesteal. It also has an effect called Phantom Critical where each attack has a 30% chance to deal additional MAGIC damage. That additional damage is calculated by taking 80% of your total attack damage and dealing it on top of your regular attacks. So it’s just like dealing a critical strike, except it’s magic damage.

The way you should look at Revenant’s Brooch is as a mid-to-late-game item that helps physical damage dealers, output mixed damage from the get-go. It’s price-point is lower than Daedalus or Monkey King Bar or Bloodthorn so it’s really optimal for heroes that have great scaling in terms of damage like Tiny and Nature’s Prophet with the Ironwood Treant Facet. Or heroes that deal damage incredibly quickly like Lina or Windranger.

The beauty of Revenant’s Brooch is that it is a great counter to heroes with high armor, but low health like Terrorblade, who has the highest the scaling agility in the game, thus amazing armor but no real health. Otherwise, if you want to deal magic damage, you would opt for items like Mjollnir for the Chain Lightning effect, Bloodthorn or Monkey King Bar, all items that are incredibly expensive or provides additional stats that some heroes aren’t really looking for.

When comparing Revenant’s Brooch to those other magic attack damage-dealing items, the comparison comes down to situation. If you’re late-game and need some attack speed and to deal with a Phantom Assassin or a hero with a lot of evasion, thanks to Butterfly, then Monkey King Bar might be for you. Bloodthorn can also be great if the target doesn’t have any way of dispelling the Soul Rend active and you have illusions or units, like Broodmother’s Spiderlings, to deal the additional static damage. Mjollnir stems from the hero buying Maelstrom, which is an effective farming tool so we see heroes like Faceless Void or Sniper pick this up before even considering Revenant’s Brooch later on.

Is Revenant’s Brooch better than Daedalus? Not quite, it is just solving a situation where the enemies are high-AGI armor-protected heroes versus high-STR health-protected heroes where Daedalus would typically shred those heroes more effectively. A lot of mid-to-late game heroes are opting for armor-based items like Phase Boots, Blade Mail, Armlet, Assault Cuirass and Shiva’s Guard but very few of these heroes have magic resistance options, except Mage Slayer or if their team opts for a Glimmer Cape and/or Pipe of Insight, so Revenant’s Brooch takes advantage of that lack of magic protective sources.
