Buddhism originated in India nearly 2,500 years ago and, since then, it has spread to every country in the world. Everywhere it goes, the Buddhist tradition morphs and changes to adapt to the unique cultural and societal conditions it encounters. As a result, Buddhism has splintered into several major divisions with various schools and sects representing different regions and cross-cultural influences. This presentation will present a concise history of the geographical spread of Buddhism, and outline the major divisions within the tradition based on their countries of origin.
One-hour slideshow followed by 30-minute Q&A.
