To build the character from scratch, Ledger isolated himself in a motel room for approximately six weeks. During this period of total solitude, he meticulously developed the Joker’s iconic tics, a unique sadistic-sounding voice, and a haunting laugh that became the character's trademark.
The commentary highlights that his commitment was so deep—a true example of method acting taken to its limit—that he essentially stopped playing a part and began "living" as the Joker. This transformation was so convincing that some of his fellow actors on set were reportedly terrified of him during filming.
