LIVE: Trying to Sound Like Hans Zimmer? Your Sound Design Is the Problem

This week we’re diving into the synthesis and sound design mistakes that keep cinematic synths from feeling powerful, tense, and score-ready — and we’ll fix them by building iconic hybrid-score sound types from scratch on the Modal 002.

In this livestream, I’ll be using the Modal 002 (a hybrid synth with a ladder filter) to break down the kinds of synth sounds people associate with Hans Zimmer’s score work — especially the Moog-inspired side of that sound — and why so many attempts end up sounding too clean, too static, too small, or too “preset.”

We’ll be designing and troubleshooting sounds in real time, including:

Moog-modular style drums with weight, bite, and movement
braahms in the style of Inception that feel massive instead of cheesy
staccato pulses ala The Dark Knight that stay tense and percussive
deep drones ala Dune with texture, menace, and depth
cinematic bass and low-end layers that feel heavy, not just loud
modulation choices that make a patch feel alive instead of static

This is less about copying Hans Zimmer note-for-note and more about understanding the sound design logic behind why these types of sounds work in a hybrid score.
