Ipilimumab, marketed under the brand name Yervoy, is a
landmark drug in the field of oncology. It was one of the first
successful "immunotherapies," a class of drugs that doesn't
directly attack cancer cells but instead empowers the patient's
own immune system to recognize and destroy them. Its approval
in 2011 for advanced melanoma represented a breakthrough,
changing the prognosis for a disease that had very limited
treatment options.
