Heavy Cochin hens are large, exceptionally fluffy, docile "gentle giants" from China, prized as ornamental birds, excellent mothers (broody), and good for cooler climates due to heavy feathering on their bodies, legs, and feet, though they need dry conditions to prevent foot rot; they lay large, brown eggs but aren't top layers, making them great pets, show birds, or for hatching other poultry.
Key Characteristics:
Origin: China (Asiatic Class).
Appearance: Massive, rounded body with dense, soft plumage covering legs and feet; short tail.
Size: Large fowl (hens 7-9 lbs, roosters up to 12 lbs).
Temperament: Exceptionally calm, friendly, docile, good with kids, poor flyers, easy to contain.
Broodiness: Extremely broody; excellent mothers, often raising ducklings or turkey poults too.
Egg Production: Fair layers of large, brown eggs, especially in cooler months.
Hardiness: Very cold-hardy due to feathering but need dry runs to prevent frostbite/mud on feet.
Colors: Recognized in Buff, White, Black, Blue, Partridge, Golden Laced, Silver Laced, Mottled, Barred, and more.
Care & Considerations:
Coop: Need clean, dry shelter; muddy feet are a major issue.
Diet: May eat more due to size; good feed for growth and egg production is key.
Predators: Large size deters hawks, but they are slow, so secure coops are vital against ground predators like coyotes.
Purpose: Best for exhibition, pets, natural incubation, or developing other breeds.
