Spearfishing is a unique underwater sport enjoyed by many people around the world. However, spearfishing is not as easy as putting on a diving suit, holding your breath underwater, and shooting spears at your target—you also have to be a good hunter. Here’s a quick guide on how to effectively hunt fish.

Mind Your Body Language
One of the most important things to remember is to take note of your body language on the surface. Whether you're chasing estuary fish, pelagics, or just chasing reef fish - movements like your duck dive, or the way that you're interacting with your equipment can mean a lot. When you're hanging around on the surface, try not to rattle your gun as much as possible, and minimise movements and sounds (like clearing your snorkel.

Creating a lot of noise when you’re duck diving can also scare the fish away. So make sure that you don't actually start kicking until you've gone through your whole action. When duck diving, you want to make sure that even the tips of your fins are just about underwater before you start kicking to minimise noise and movement.

Know Where The Fish Is
There are quite a few different ways to hunt a fish depending on whether you're diving inshore, estuaries, or out on the reef chasing pelagic fish. Depending on what depths that you're in, make sure that you’re in a comfortable position on the reef. This method may change with some species like wahoo, marlin, dolphin fish and more, that you will only most likely interact with on the top five meters. But for all your estuary fish and also most of your reef species - the smart thing to do is to go to the bottom and make the most of your camo. Or if you're not using a camo suit, try to blend in and become one with the reef. That way you don't look as much like death from above. You won't seem like a big predator species, like a shark. Once you're at the bottom, sink straight down to the reef, hold on to a piece of reef so you're not getting jiggled around especially if you're chasing species like mulloway, up in the shallows, or up in the whitewash.

Stay Quiet And Hidden
When you descend underwater, keep your chin tucked down. Focus on getting to the bottom first, before worrying too much about chasing fish. Swim until you’ve gotten into a position within the reef that you’re comfortable with. Relax, hold down low and keep an eye on the fish you’re chasing.

Make sure you are relaxed and really quiet. Focus on getting to the bottom, especially when you're chasing reef species. Try to maintain a small profile as much as possible. Aim your spear properly. Before you set out, make sure you have the right spearfishing equipment.
