On Feb. 1, 2017, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., researchers with Baylor University’s Institute for Studies of Religion (ISR) unveiled the findings of a new study, “Assessing the Faith-Based Response to Homelessness in America: Findings from Eleven Cities,” which examined the social and economic impact of faith-based organizations on cities across the U.S. in dealing with emergency and long-term solutions to homelessness.
Study co-authors Byron R. Johnson, Ph.D., director of ISR and Distinguished Professor of the Social Sciences at Baylor, and William Wubbenhorst, a non-resident fellow at ISR, presented the findings. Their presentation was followed by a panel discussion with Rev. Andy Bales, CEO of Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles, CA; Herb Johnson, president and CEO of San Diego Rescue Mission in San Diego, CA; Janet Miller, vice mayor and District VI city council member in Wichita, KS; Brooks Ann McKinney, director of vulnerable populations at Mission Health and Hospitals in Asheville, NC; and Tonier Cain, author and national speaker on homelessness. The discussion was moderated by Robert Doar, fellow in poverty studies at the American Enterprise Institute and former commissioner of New York City’s Human Resources Administration.
