British Colonial Era (The Shrubbery): It was originally the private courtyard of Sir Thomas Tartan's bungalow and was known simply as "The Shrubbery." During the British Raj, it was a popular meeting place for British women residents in Darjeeling.
The 1934 Earthquake: Sir Tartan's house and courtyard were destroyed in the devastating 1934 earthquake.
Rebuilding and Post-Independence: It was rebuilt and, after India's independence, it became a favorite location for Bollywood filmmakers for shooting sequences, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s.
Creation of the Park (1976): In 1976, the then Governor of West Bengal took interest in the plot, and it was officially developed into a beautiful public park. It was around this time that it acquired the name Shrubbery Nightingale Park. The "Nightingale" part of the name might refer to the nightingales that historically lived in the area.
Neglect and Renovation: The park suffered from neglect during the violent Gorkhaland agitation in the 1980s. However, it was later renovated and reopened to the public, notably in 2011, with new features like walkways, a Lord Shiva statue, a musical fountain, and an open circular stage for cultural events.
Today, Shrubbery Nightingale Park is a beautiful public space that offers magnificent views of the Kanchenjunga range and often hosts cultural programs.
