150 mills once operated in the valleys radiating from Stroud, driven by water-power to serve the needs of the woolen industry. Those remaining are a characteristic feature of the area but securing their on-going conservation and suitable uses is an increasing challenge.
One such mill complex is Lewiston Mill at Brimscombe. Here, the developer Coburn has repurposed and restored derelict mill buildings creating 20 residential units and five commercial units as office space, with six of the residential units new build homes overlooking the mill pond.
The redevelopment, on a restricted site, has been executed to a very high standard both externally and internally and with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency. It respects the heritage of the former mill and visually there is a good mixing of old and new, in brickwork, some natural stone and with slate roof coverings. The commercial uses have been focused at ground level within the existing mill structures, and the residential uses elsewhere with on-site parking in the form of car ports and “underground” parking below one apartment block.
The whole project represents an excellent re-use of the existing site and structures, and has resulted in an attractive development which Colburn should be proud of.
It demonstrates what can be done with flair and imagination.
