The Type 96 Main Battle Tank (MBT) is one of the key armored fighting vehicles in service with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China. Introduced in the late 1990s, the Type 96 was developed as a modern successor to older Chinese tanks and serves as a vital component of China’s armored forces today.
Development and Background
The Type 96 is an evolution of the earlier Type 85/Type 88 tanks, incorporating improvements in firepower, mobility, and protection. It was designed and produced by Norinco (China North Industries Corporation). The tank entered service in 1997 and has since become one of the most widely deployed MBTs in the PLA, alongside the more advanced Type 99.
Design and Armament
Armament:
The Type 96 is equipped with a 125mm smoothbore gun, capable of firing a variety of munitions including armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS), high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) rounds, and high-explosive fragmentation (HE-FRAG) shells. It can also fire anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) through the gun barrel, enhancing its versatility.
Secondary Armament includes a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and a 12.7mm anti-aircraft machine gun mounted on the turret.
Fire Control System (FCS):
The Type 96 features a modern FCS with laser rangefinders, thermal imaging, and ballistic computers, giving it respectable targeting capabilities in both day and night conditions.
Armor and Protection
The tank’s protection consists of composite armor and optional explosive reactive armor (ERA) on the front and sides, providing better defense against modern anti-tank threats. The tank is also equipped with NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) protection, automatic fire suppression systems, and smoke grenade launchers for increased survivability.
