Shale gas is one of the unconventional gasses. With conventional gases, if you drill a hole in the ground, the gas will flow. With unconventional gas, more than drilling is required - what is called hydraulic fracturing, or 'fracking'.
This involves injecting water, sand and chemicals at very high pressure into the well bore in order to release the gas. Shale gas has transformed US domestic gas production, but there are serious environmental issues from involved with fracking. Paul Stevens explains.
