Bunny and the Bull (2009), directed by Paul King in his feature debut, is a surreal and whimsical British road movie that paradoxically takes place almost entirely within the confines of a London flat. The film follows Stephen Turnbull (Edward Hogg), an agoraphobic, routine-obsessed man who has not ventured outside for nearly a year following a disastrous European road trip.
Stephen's meticulously ordered life is disrupted when an infestation of mice drives him to the brink of leaving his home. As he contemplates opening his front door, his mind reels backward to the previous year’s journey, which was undertaken with his "friend" Bunny (Simon Farnaby), an uninhibited, gambling-addicted, and womanizing rogue.
The "trip" unfolds as a series of surreal, animated, and memory-triggered vignettes, where the flat’s furniture and possessions transform into the landscapes of Europe, from Polish industrial areas to Spanish bullfields. Initially, the trip is a monotonous tour of obscure museums, but it takes a turn when they meet Eloisa (Veronica Echegui), a fiery Spanish waitress, in a dreary Polish seafood restaurant. After Bunny wins the restaurant’s delivery car in a bet, the trio sets off toward Spain.
A tense love triangle develops, with the passive, socially awkward Stephen falling for Eloisa, while the charismatic Bunny successfully seduces her. Their friendship becomes severely strained, culminating in a dramatic, emotionally charged, and dreamlike sequence in Spain, where Bunny attempts to realize his drunken dream of becoming a matador against an animatronic bull.
Bunny and the Bull is a visually inventive film, utilizing lo-fi cardboard sets, miniatures, and stop-motion, often compared to the style of Michel Gondry. The film features quirky performances and cameos from The Mighty Boosh stars Julian Barratt (as a dog-milk-craving tramp) and Noel Fielding (as a self-obsessed matador). Despite its visual charm and humor, the film is a poignant exploration of grief, friendship, and mental fragility, highlighting the emotional fallout of a "disastrous trek" that left Stephen broken and isolated.
Bunny and the Bull is a testament to the power of memory and the comfort of routine, ultimately showcasing a "touching and beautiful journey to the end of the room".
