Sepideh Farsi interview on Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk: Gaza under siege, Fatma’s resilience, human connection & loss
Sepideh Farsi describes the origins of the project, which began with her need to understand the reality of life in Gaza under bombardment. She discusses the challenges she faced reaching Gaza, ultimately filming conversations with Fatma, a recent refugee in Cairo, via phone. Farsi explains her decision to retain moments of technical imperfection—dropped calls, silences, laughter—to convey the immediacy and humanity of their exchanges. She reflects on the painstaking editing process, shaping hours of footage and voice notes into a narrative that highlights Fatma’s resilience, wit, and daily life amidst crisis. Farsi emphasises the film’s role in countering dehumanising narratives, underlining the universality of Fatma’s hopes and grief. She discusses the devastating impact of Fatma’s killing, just after the film was selected for Cannes, and how this loss deepens the film’s resonance as both testimony and legacy. Ultimately, Farsi views the documentary as a call to recognise shared humanity and the urgency of bearing witness, even as she acknowledges the inherently political nature of telling such a story.
