Alligators have a distinctive territorial call known as a "bellow." It's a deep, rumbling vocalization used mainly by males to assert dominance, establish territory, and attract mates—especially during mating season in the spring.
Key facts about the alligator's bellow:
Sound: A low-frequency, guttural roar or growl. It's loud and can be heard from a long distance.
Behavior: Males often raise their heads and tails, inflate their lungs, and arch their backs. They may even vibrate the water around them in what's known as an "infrasonic display"—making the water "dance" without a sound humans can hear.
Purpose: Mainly to warn rivals and attract females.
