When it comes to rally racing, few cars have achieved the same level of success and acclaim as the Lancia 037. The Italian automaker’s rear-wheel drive masterpiece was born out of the era of Group B rallying, which saw some of the most insane and dangerous rally cars ever built. Despite the 037's humble beginnings as a production car-based rally machine, it went on to win the World Rally Championship in 1983, marking the last time a rear-wheel drive car would take the top prize. Btw I made an entire video on the 037 and Lancia’s interesting ways in which the bent the rules in there favour to help them take said title. So if that’s something you would like to watch go and watch that video after this one.
Anyways, Today, the Lancia 037 remains a beloved icon of rally racing, and that legacy has been honored in the form of the Kimera Martini 7. This limited-run model is a true love letter to the original 037, with modern features that blend seamlessly with the car's classic design and engineering.
At the heart of the Martini 7 is a 2.1-liter turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine that produces 550 horsepower, which is up from the 500 horsepower in the other Kimera EVO37 examples. Now 550 HP doesn’t sound all that crazy in an era where 4 door sedans make almost 700hp, but Thanks to the use of Kevlar and carbon fiber in place of fiberglass body panels, the car weighs in at just over 2,400 pounds or around 1.1 tons, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of about 0.22 horsepower per pound, or 0.5hp per KG. which is really impressive. Now all 550 horsies gets transmitted to the rear wheels via a manual transmission with shorter gears than normal, making for a truly old-school driving experience.
But there is more to Martini 7 than just the engine, you see the car also boasts a number of unique touches that pay homage to the car's legacy. For example, the rear bumper features a quick-release system that exposes the gearbox and exhaust, just like the 037 Group B Evo 2. The car's graphics also reference the iconic Martini Racing livery, with a few changes, such as the words "World Rally Champion" on the side.
All of these features come together to make the Martini 7 a stunning tribute to the seven total championships won by the Martini racing team. And while the 037 was just one part of that legacy, it played a crucial role in cementing Lancia's reputation as a dominant force in rally racing.
