In the mid-1960s, as Britain faced the inevitable collapse of its final colonies in the Middle East, attempts to establish a democratic government that would succeed the colonial power were thwarted through the intervention of foreign powers, who sought to carve up the colony of Aden for themselves, leading to a bitter but ultimately fruitless campaign by the British armed forces to root out the rebel factions, which led to the violent and protracted Aden Emergency.
