In this lecture, Mr. Sunny Kumar, Expert Faculty at Drishti IAS, explains the concept of Constitutional Development in British India and the reasons behind various constitutional reforms introduced by the British. The session discusses the meaning of constitutional development and highlights that merely having laws or a constitution does not ensure good governance unless those laws work in favor of the people. It explains the two phases of constitutional development (1773–1858 and after 1858) and the conflict between the British Parliament and the East India Company, which led to several legislative changes. Important acts such as the Regulating Act, Pitt’s India Act, Charter Acts, Council Acts, and Government of India Acts are discussed along with the motives behind these reforms, including regulating company rule, opening Indian markets, missionary activities, and controlling political pressure in India. The session is highly useful for UPSC, State PCS, and other competitive examinations.
