Hello everyone and welcome to this video of the walk from Aberdyfi to Pennal on the Wales Coast Path filmed in May 2025!
So, here we are. Aberdyfi but if you're an English speaker, you'll probably know it as Aberdovey. Aberdyfi itself is a picture-postcard village. You’ve got this row of colourful houses—pinks, blues, yellows—all huddled along the waterfront, facing the sun and the sea. It has that timeless feel of a British seaside town, but with a character that is distinctly Welsh.
Leaving Aberdyfi the hill is tough going up The steepness is a real challenge. No doubt about it. It’s the kind of hill that makes you question your fitness, The hill demands effort, and in return, it slowly starts to share its secrets. You feel every single metre you climb. You earn it.
When I turn around to look back Aberdyfi shrinks below us, its colourful houses turning into tiny specks, the harbour looking like a neat little toy set. The whole Dyfi estuary, which was so huge at sea level, now spreads out like a giant, glistening map a wonderful view!
We’ve arrived at the Panorama Walk. And it is, without a doubt, one of the most perfectly named paths in all of Wales. On the far side, the coastline stretches south towards Borth and Aberystwyth, a faint promise on the horizon.
Turning inland, you're hit with rolling green hills, a patchwork of fields in every shade of green you can imagine, all stitched together with old hedgerows and stone walls. These are the lush valleys of rural Wales, dotted with tiny white farmhouses that look like scattered sheep. And behind them, rising in layers of blue and purple, are the foothills of Southern Snowdonia
For a couple of miles, this spectacular view is our constant companion, and it never gets old. To our right, another valley opens up – Cwm Maethlon, or the Happy Valley, a deep, lush basin of green that looks almost impossibly perfect. The path balances you between these two worlds: the vast, open estuary on one side, and this sheltered, intimate valley on the other.
We pass a slate marker pointing to Carn March Arthur, a mark in a nearby rock. Legend says it’s the hoofprint of King Arthur's horse, Llamrai, made during a struggle to drag a fearsome water monster, the Afanc, from a lake. It’s a small detail, but it adds another layer to everything. We’re not just walking through a beautiful landscape; we’re walking through myths and legends.
And so begins the final act of the walk: the long, meandering descent towards Pennal. After the effort of the climb and the epic scale of the Panorama Walk, this downhill stretch feels like a slow, welcome return to the valley. The world, which was spread out beneath us, now starts to rise up to meet us.
The final approach to Pennal is gentle. We pass a few farms and houses before the lane leads us right into the heart of the village.
