=======[ Learning from Fish - JVT XXXX.X ]=======
School children enjoy many activities both inside and outside the classroom. However, at the Makado Elementary School, students have something quite special. The school has a seawater aquarium.

The children are thrilled to look at the marine life while at school. The history of the aquarium goes back 40 years to a time when the school was beside the ocean of Yokohama. At that time, landfill projects began along the waterfront. As a result, graduates and parents worked together to build this aquarium so that the sea would remain with the school.

The aquarium gets most of its fish as donations. Local fishermen bring in unusual fish that have wandered into their nets. Today, there are over 100 fish of 20 different species living at the aquarium.

The children look forward to taking care of the fish. As part of class, the teacher instructs the students on the proper care and feeding required. The aim is for the students to appreciate marine life through observing and actually taking care of the fish.

"I think it's a wonderful opportunity for children to learn the value of life by actually looking after these fish, away from the world of textbooks."

It's lunchtime and the young aquarium attendants go to work. Being an aquarium attendant is a popular job among the students.

"The fish seems to enjoy it when I help which makes me happy."

Removing dead fish is also part of the job.

"I've learned that it's really difficult to keep marine animals in tanks."

Joe Toyoda is an aquarium attendant. Since he assumed the post, his interest in fish has increased dramatically. There seems to be many students interested in marine life perhaps because of the aquarium at the school.

Eiji Kurashima is a graduate of Makado Elementary and now teaches here. "Attending a school with an aquarium has given different generations of graduates common memories."

The graduates have been hosting a variety of events, with hopes of giving the children more opportunities to come in touch with marine life.

Today, a local fisherman has brought in another shark for the aquarium. The sharks are of a harmless variety, very popular among the kids.

Memories of sea life and the salty smell of the aquarium create a special feeling in the students' hearts that may last a lifetime.
