About the 1911 Max Control Recoil Springs Kit (DISCONTINUED):
Designed to fit and function in most 1911-pattern pistols from a wide variety of manufacturers
Kit included three custom recoil spring weights:
14 lb recoil spring
16 lb recoil spring
18 lb recoil spring
Intended as direct replacements for worn factory recoil springs
16 lb spring was often recommended as a good all-around choice for standard loads
Heavier springs (18 lb) better suited for heavier/+P loads, while lighter springs (14 lb) worked better with lighter loads
Manufactured from high-quality American spring steel for long-term durability
Previously protected by the M*CARBO 100% Lifetime Guarantee and made in the USA
Spring Tuning Concepts Covered:
Heavier loads generally require heavier recoil springs; lighter loads generally work better with lighter springs
A spring that is too light can allow the slide to open and close too quickly and harshly, increasing felt recoil and frame battering
A spring that is too heavy can make the slide difficult to cycle and may prevent full cycling, causing malfunctions
Indications it may be time to change your recoil spring:
Failures to return to battery
Noticeable shortening of the spring vs. a new one (around 1/2" less overall length)
Sudden change in ejection or extraction pattern
Unknown spring history in used or older pistols
This video demonstrates:
Safely clearing the pistol
Reviewing the different recoil spring options
Removing the factory recoil spring
Installing and test-firing with 18 lb, 16 lb, and 14 lb springs
Basic troubleshooting for slide cycling issues
Returning to the preferred “middle ground” spring weight for best reliability
Recoil spring direction in 1911 pistols is generally non-directional (can be installed either way), and the spring fits over the guide rod to control how the slide cycles, feeds, and returns to battery.
