Is Ain't a real word? Who decides what constitutes correct and incorrect grammar? And who says we have to listen to them?
These are questions that we rarely ask ourselves, but they play a big part in the scientific study of language, and as it turns out, the answer isn't nearly as simple as most people think.
Prescriptivism is the view that there is a single correct way to speak (or only a few correct ways) and that everyone should follow those rules.
Descriptivism is the view that any sentence spoken naturally by a native speaker is, in fact, rule bound, and is considered grammatical in that speaker's dialect or idiolect.
