Description: In the canon of Canadian art, the genre of landscape often focuses on romantic depictions of natural spaces, with an emphasis on topography, conditions of light, or exaggerated colour and texture. However, there is a difference in how landscape is visually interpreted by settlers and Indigenous and Métis artists. Our understanding of the genre can be expanded to consider how different cultures existed with the land historically, how they relate to it today, and how these experiences are translated to art. What does landscape in art and in this province really mean? This discussion will provide an understanding of how contemporary Indigenous and Métis artists depict landscape, broadening our knowledge of the genre that shapes how we see and understand this nation.
