Chempan Kolumban is an iconic figure in the history of Kerala

​The Legend: In 1922, while accompanying W.J. John (the Superintendent of Malankara Estate) on a hunting trip, Kolumban showed him the deep gorge between the Kuravan and Kurathi hills.
​He explained how the Periyar River flowed through this narrow gap. This observation eventually led to the engineering marvel that is the Idukki Arch Dam, one of the highest arch dams in Asia.
​Life and Legacy
​ Kolumban lived in the Narikkadu area of Vazhathoppu Panchayat in Idukki.
​He passed away on June 21, 1970, at the age of 112. Sadly, he did not live to see the formal inauguration of the completed dam project in 1976.
​Kolumban Memorial (Samadhi)
​To honor his contribution to the state's power project, a memorial was built in Idukki.
​ The memorial is situated at Vellappara, near Cheruthoni, overlooking the very dam he helped conceptualize.
​ A 12-foot tall bronze statue of Kolumban stands there, created by the sculptor Kunnuvila Murali.
​It is now a protected monument and a popular stop for tourists visiting the Idukki reservoir area.
​Kolumban remains a symbol of the indigenous knowledge that paved the way for modern infrastructure in Kerala.
