A 17-year Cleveland Clinic study with over 122,000 participants has shown that inactivity is more dangerous to your health than smoking cigarettes. This is serious stuff, my friends. Humans were not designed to sit in front of TVs and computers all day with virtually no real human interaction. We were designed to move, gather, lift, harvest, and cook as a community to remain vibrant and healthy.
Lack of physical activity has now reached number four on the global causes of death list, right after high blood pressure, smoking, and high blood sugar. Our lack of any sort of movement is killing us.
But you don’t have to run ultramarathons or do any extreme training to reap the benefits of exercise.
For example, research presented at the 2015 European Society of Cardiology conference in London suggested that just taking a brisk 25-minute walk every day can tack on three to seven years of extra life. Moreover, a Cambridge University research team tracking 300,000 Europeans for 12 years determined that daily walks reduced the death rate of normal-weight people by 25 percent, and by 16 percent among the obese.
Besides extending your life, there are plenty of additional reasons to have a nurturing relationship with your body and stay fit. Here are my top nine benefits of exercise taken from my book, Engine 2 Seven Day Rescue.
