BAKERSFIELD, Calif. | In the early hours of Saturday, September 28, 2024, firefighters from the Kern County Fire Department (KCFD) and the Bakersfield Fire Department (BFD) successfully prevented a devastating fire from destroying two massive 40,000 square-foot commercial buildings near the intersection of Quinn Rd and Lencioni Ave. The fire, named the Quinn Incident, erupted in a commercial area and had the potential to cause catastrophic damage to multiple businesses. Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of firefighters, the buildings and everything inside were spared from destruction.
At approximately 2:30 AM, the fire was initially reported as a grass fire. However, as KCFD units approached, large flames and a thick column of smoke quickly revealed the situation was far more serious. Recognizing the growing intensity of the fire, the call was upgraded to a structure fire response, and additional units were dispatched.
Upon arrival, firefighters were confronted with a wall of flames raging behind the two large steel buildings. The fire was consuming vehicles, poly rope, fiberoptic cables, and plastics stored outside, creating an extremely dangerous and intense situation. Despite the ferocity of the fire, firefighters quickly set their objective: protect the two massive buildings and prevent the flames from reaching inside.
Realizing the scale of the challenge, both second and third alarms were called, bringing in a total of 42 KCFD firefighters and 21 BFD firefighters. Multiple fire hydrants were tapped, and hundreds of feet of hose were deployed as crews attacked the flames. Using K12 saws to cut through fences and gain access to critical areas, firefighters worked tirelessly to assess and contain the fire before it could breach the structures. For hours, firefighters fought the intense heat and towering flames. Heavy equipment from the KCFD Heavy Equipment Yard was also brought in to pull apart piles of burning debris, allowing crews to reach the heart of the fire.
Thanks to their unwavering efforts, the fire was contained mainly to the exterior of the buildings, sparing the 40,000 square-foot structures and their valuable contents from significant damage. What could have been a disaster for the commercial properties was mostly averted due to the actions of the firefighters on scene. No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
