📖 Plot Summary:
Set during the waning days of the Civil War, Women They Almost Lynched takes place in the rowdy neutral town of Border City — a lawless outpost where both Union and Confederate sympathizers try to coexist under an uneasy truce. Into this volatile town arrives Sally Maris, a prim young woman who’s just inherited her brother’s saloon.

Sally quickly finds herself in over her head, caught between gunfighters, spies, and ruthless outlaws. The town is already tense when notorious bushwhacker William Quantrill and his gang — including Jesse James and Kate Quantrill (a gun-slinging femme fatale) — roll in.

But instead of becoming a damsel in distress, Sally — alongside other determined women — picks up a gun, takes charge, and fights back. In a world dominated by men, these women defy expectations and take a stand, proving they’re every bit as tough as the outlaws who underestimated them.

🎥 Fun Facts:
Directed by Allan Dwan, a silent-era pioneer who made over 400 films and was still pushing boundaries in the 1950s.

The film features Jesse James and William Quantrill, blending historical characters with fictional drama.

Actress Joan Leslie swaps her usual ingénue roles for a tough, gun-toting heroine — a rare sight for 1950s westerns.

Released by Republic Pictures, known for fast-paced B-westerns and serials, the film has gained cult status for its strong female characters and feminist tone.

The title may sound like exploitation, but the film is surprisingly empowering and progressive for its time.

🏆 Legacy:
Considered a cult feminist western, praised for its reversal of genre stereotypes.

Rare example of a female-led action western in the 1950s — a decade otherwise dominated by stoic male gunslingers.

Now appreciated by classic film fans and gender studies scholars alike for its bold storytelling and strong female leads.
