The Judería de Córdoba, ‘the Jewish Quarter of Córdoba’, is the area of the Spanish city of Córdoba in which the Jews lived between the 10th and 15th centuries. It is located in the Historic centre of Córdoba, close to the Mezquita Catedral (the Mosque-Cathedral), in the area surrounding the following streets: Deanes, Manríquez, Tomás Conde, Judíos, Almanzor and Romero. The Juderia houses one of the oldest synagogues of the world; the Cordoba synagogue (built 1314-15).
Cordoba had been a seat of Jewish life in Andalusia for centuries. The Rambam (Maimonides), who was one of the most influential medieval Rabbis, was a notable resident of the town.
ℹ️ Tapas are appetisers, or snacks, in Spanish cuisine. Available in a wide variety, they may be cold (such as mixed olives and cheese) or warm (such as chopitos, which are battered, fried baby squid). In select restaurants and bars in Spain, tapas have evolved into their own sophisticated cuisine. Throughout the nation, diners can order many different tapas and combine them to make a full meal. In this video we see a Jamon tapa being prepared.
Jamón is a type of dry-cured ham produced in Spain. It is one of the most globally recognized food items of Spanish cuisine, and is regularly a component of tapas.
❓ It has been claimed that tapas originated in the south of Spain during the time of the Spanish Inquisition as a means of publicly identifying conversos, Jews who had converted to Christianity. Since tapas often contain Jamón or other non-kosher foodstuffs, the reluctance of the conversos to eat whatever tapas dish was offered to them could be taken as a tacit admission that they had not abandoned their Jewish faith, thus tapas were a tool of the Spanish Inquisition. Maybe true, maybe not.
