6 Days Hunting The 40 Mile Caribou Herd (A Persistence Hunt)

Описание: This adventure Sarah and I spend multiple days truck camping and hunting for caribou. We start off by driving up the steese hwy into the hunting grounds and run into an old friend that tells us that the herd has moving away from the highway and back towards zone 2. Despite this news we still decide to hike and glass around for the day and after not seeing any sign of caribou we decided to call it a day. A couple weekends later we decided to drive up the taylor highway into zone 3. There we spend 3 days driving, hiking and glassing all around and still we didn't see any caribou. On the way home we talked to a few other hunters that also didn't any caribou, which made us feel a little better knowing we weren't the only ones struggling to find the caribou. After an unsuccessful fall hunt my buddy Colton and I decide to go out on the opening day of the winter hunt up the steese. We brought his snowmachine and rode about 10 miles back off the road and yet we saw no signs of caribou. On our way down off the hills we ran into a couple hunters we saw on the way up and told us that had just seen a group of caribou crossing the trail running up the hill we just came down. We asked if they were going to try and pursue them and they said they weren't and that we could try. So, we turned around and rode along the ridge line and lo and behold we found them. We quickly realized why they didn't want to pursue. All of the caribou appeared to be cows, which aren't allowed for harvest. Right when we were getting ready to call it quits a lone bull came trotting up the hill following the scent of the cows. In our haste to get into a position to take a shot I completely missed filming the moment. Colton took a shot and we heard the impact, but the bull kept running up the hill. We used all of our energy to get up the hill make sure he was down. Luckily Colton made a clean shot and he was down. We gutted the caribou and loaded it up to finish processing at home. After processing we had over 100 pounds of meat to share and make delicious meals with.
