In this talk, Richard Good encourages audiences to look beyond the narrow timeframe of criminal conviction to case closed. The talk explores the pathways that lead the overwhelming majority of people into the justice system and the barriers they encounter on their journeys back out. Using the familiar timeline of a crime drama – where crimes are reported, someone is caught, convicted, and sentenced, and then the case is considered closed – the talk questions whether justice truly ends there.
It highlights the role that society’s inaction plays in these journeys and poses a challenge: if people are sent into the justice system to take responsibility for their actions, shouldn’t society take responsibility for lowering the barriers they face on the way out? Drawing on the experience of The Turnaround Project’s journey to date, the talk paints a picture of an emerging movement – bringing together individuals who have served sentences and those who have not – to find new ways of reducing barriers and creating opportunities for change. Richard Good has worked for over twenty years in politics, public affairs and public service in Northern Ireland (NI) in roles such as senior staff member of the Alliance Party, Adviser to the Speaker of the NI Assembly, and Special Adviser to Northern Ireland's Minister of Justice. These periods covered many significant stages of the political and peace process and the establishment of power-sharing institutions. These experiences required working across the political spectrum within Northern Ireland and with politicians and officials in Britain and Ireland, developing skills now applied in other settings. Richard currently serves on a Commission established by the Northern Ireland Executive to identify fresh approaches to flags, identity, culture and tradition in a divided community. He is also founder and Director of the Turnaround Project, which encourages enterprises employing people before and after prison, addressing barriers to employment for those returning to the community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
