DIY How to fix thin lawn, brown lawn, shallow roots, sticky thatch, gray grass is not always an easy case. This video will show you that thick dense clay, lack of water and dense thatch can cause a whirlwind of problems. Thatch is the main culprit in the video. The lack of water has caused a lot of winter die out in this lawn. In return the grass is thin, the die out has turned gray and gummy. That has caused a sticky dead grass mess on top of the soil that has to be removed by use of a thatch rake. In my opinion a power rake is not the best for removing what I call Gummy Thatch. Gummy thatch is a thick sticky dense layer of dead grass sitting on top of the soil and roots of the grass that prohibits new rhizomes from surfacing.

Similar to snow mold, the gummy thatch doesn't allow for the proper amount of oxygen transfer into and out of the soil. It also doesn't allow the fertilizer to reach the soil. It binds up the water attempting to evaporate. The suns rays make this layer hot as well. All of these issues causes the lawn to stress and disallows new rhizome growth.

The fix to this situation is using a thatch rake to remove the gummy thatch, mechanical aeration using a ryan lawn air V, an application of micronutrients and mycorrhizae and some organic fertilizer.
