Alongside Pilates and fascial release work, Kinesiology taping is a favourite of mine when it comes to facilitating better movement patterns and function.
I wish everyone who had a knee replacement knew about this as a complementary tool for ice packs and pain meds.
Watch as I share my own technique for how to improve pain, swelling, bruising, and range of motion in knee replacement clients.
So many of my clients also tell me how this improves their sleep quality as well. I love this straightforward way of applying the tape because people can easily do it themselves.
This is also great for any other joint injuries, fractures, or large bruises where there is a large amount of swelling and bruising.
Tips:
Clean off all oil/lotion/residue with a witch hazel, alcohol swab, or soap and water if the incision is closed.
Avoid taping over the incision to reduce the risk of infection and/or impeding knee bending.
Avoid applying tape on the soft skin in the back of the knee, especially if an indvidual has sensitive skin.
Keep the tape on for 24-48 hours only for the first application to see how the the skin tolerates the adhesive.
Remove the tape at any time if the skin becomes irritated or uncomfortable in any way.
Alternate where the strips are placed on the skin, to allow the skin to breathe in between tape jobs.
STOP taping if the skin becomes irritated. Consider switching to sensitive Kinesiotape or discontinue altogether.
