Basant Festival Debate in Pakistan | Public Opinion on Kite Flying & Government Policies
The Basant festival has long been a part of the cultural identity in Lahore and different cities of Pakistan. Traditionally, it was celebrated with kite flying, musical gatherings, and friends and families getting together on rooftops to enjoy the arrival of spring.
However, with rising safety concerns — particularly due to the use of dangerous, sharp kite strings (chemical manja), which have caused injuries and even deaths — Basant has increasingly become controversial. This public-opinion segment captures the real voice of the awaam on the streets regarding whether Basant should be allowed or permanently banned.
In this video, multiple citizens share their views on key issues such as:
Is Basant an important cultural event or just a waste of time and money?
Does the festival increase risk to human life unnecessarily?
Should it be regulated by the government instead of being banned entirely?
How do economic difficulties affect the mindset of the public toward celebrations?
Who is responsible for financial losses after sudden bans by the Punjab government?
📍 Recently, when the Punjab Government briefly lifted the ban, people purchased kites and string worth millions of rupees — only for the ban to be enforced again following a tragic death of an 18-year-old youth. This raised serious concerns about government inconsistency and how such policy changes burden ordinary citizens.
Many people argue that no entertainment or celebration can justify risking human lives. They stress that the sharp kite strings not only injure bikers and children but also create a stressful environment during the festival. Some citizens also believe Basant is against cultural and religious values.
On the other hand, a portion of the public feels Basant is a major source of joy, tourism, business, and economic activity, especially for kite sellers and related industries. They suggest that with strict regulation, safer string options, and designated kite-flying zones outside city areas, Basant can be safely celebrated.
🎙️ Through this program “Awami Masail,” we aim to present unbiased opinions from everyday Pakistanis who are directly affected by both the ban and the cultural loss.
