The ABC's Bill Birtles and the Australian Financial Review's Michael Smith found themselves involved in an extraordinary diplomatic standoff, with both men sheltering in Australian diplomatic compounds in recent days.
Seven Chinese police officers arrived on Birtles' doorstep last week, demanding he submit to questioning and informing him he was banned from leaving the country.
