This playlist provides an overview of the #Routing Information #Protocol (#RIP) used by routers and its advantages and disadvantages.
• 25 : RIP - Fundamentals of Communications
As we learned in the "Terms" section, there are different classes of routing protocols. The two common classes are interior gateway protocols and exterior gateway protocols. Interior gateway protocols, or IGPs, are used within an autonomous system, like a company's LAN. Exterior gateway protocols, or EGPs, are used between autonomous systems, like across the Internet.
Interior gateway protocols allow for the complete distribution of information between all routers within the network. The most common protocols in this class are RIP and the Open Shortest Path First, or OSPF, protocol. (We'll be learning about OSPF in our next lesson.) Each of these IGPs has mechanisms in place to ensure that all routers within the network get all the information required to properly forward packets.
