An interview with Dr. Shriya Patnaik by Prof. Nicole Bourbonnais, Associate Professor of International History & Politics and Co-director of the Gender Centre at the Geneva Graduate Institute, based on her doctoral research. Shriya's research problematises the passage of colonial and postcolonial legal and policy measures, as well as sexual regulation projects, surrounding Devadasi abolition in the modern Indian nation-state, culminating in the extinction of the regional Devadasi community in the state of Odisha (colloquially known as Maharis) in 2021. This work also provides an opportunity to shed light on the current political climate's impacts on iterations of popular culture and regional memory surrounding this community, especially in how history is rewritten and de-historicised through the lens of these actors in the present.
