MLA Sonawari Says Mid-Day Meal Workers’ Crisis is UT-Wide, Govt Working on Policy.

Bandipora, July 23: Scores of Mid-Day Meal workers, mostly women from various villages of the Sumbal region, staged a strong protest today at Irrigation Colony Sumbal, demanding the immediate release of their pending wages and a revision in their monthly honorarium.

The protesting workers, who have been serving school children under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme since 2005, expressed deep resentment against the government for what they termed as prolonged negligence and injustice. The workers stated that despite their monthly honorarium being a meager ₹900, they have not received any payment for the past two years.

“We have dedicated nearly two decades to preparing meals for children in schools, but today we are left without any income. ₹900 was already too little, and now we are not even getting that,” said one of the aggrieved cooks during the protest.

The protest received strong support from ReT Teachers Forum State Executive Mohammad Ashraf and Zone President Sumbal Zahoor Ahmad, who condemned the government’s apathy and extended full solidarity with the workers. They demanded that the workers be brought under the Minimum Wages Act and that their grievances be addressed on an urgent basis.

Later, a delegation of protesting workers met with MLA Sonawari, Hilal Akbar Lone, who acknowledged their concerns. He informed the workers that the issue is not limited to Sonawari alone but is a Union Territory-wide problem. He assured them that the government is actively working on a policy framework to resolve the matter and ensure justice for Mid-Day Meal workers across Jammu and Kashmir.
