Tobacco has a complicated legacy in the Balkans, often representing many contrasting things to different groups and people. The tobacco industry has both funded development and destabilized the region. In this video, I will discuss how the tobacco industry exacerbated social and ethnic tensions in the Balkans.
This video was inspired by the book "Balkan Smoke: Tobacco and the Making of Modern Bulgaria" by Mary Neuburger.
